Greg’s work within CITL focuses on developing a comprehensive approach to instructional development, as well as identifying new ways to foster and spread innovative teaching among the IUB faculty. He has a special interest in understanding the characteristics of innovative teachers and how programs can be structured to foster the growth of those qualities.  Greg holds a PhD in English with an emphasis in Rhetoric and Composition; his teaching background focuses on first-year writing courses.

Jessica serves as the Advocates for Community Engagement (ACE) Coordinator for the Service-Learning Program. As the ACE Coordinator, Jessica supervises 40 undergraduate student ACEs who are working to facilitate and grow Service-Learning on the IU Bloomington campus through connecting community partners, faculty, and service-learning students. Jessica supports the work of the ACEs through educational and developmental opportunities focused on leadership, social justice, and civic engagement. Jessica has a BA in Psychology and a Master’s Degree in Social Work.

Matt specializes in the pedagogy behind multimedia learning and the technologies that best support student-centered learning strategies. His interests include finding creative solutions and applications for multimedia production, web development, and digital animation.

Megan Betz is the Community Engagement Coordinator for the Service Learning Program, serving as the liaison between campus and community partners to foster productive, mutually beneficial projects. Before joining CITL, she earned her BA in journalism and French from Ball State University and her MPA from SPEA. While completing her graduate studies, she worked with various local agencies doing grant writing and communications. She is working toward her PhD in the Geography Department at IUB, conducting dissertation research that examines ideas of community in urban agriculture.

Kate’s areas of engagement include blended and online learning environments, technology-enhanced active learning strategies, emerging technologies, and faculty learning communities. She received a Master of Fine Arts from the School of Fine Arts Indiana University Bloomington in 2002.

Madeleine serves as the campus Turnitin.com administrator and coordinates plagiarism prevention workshops. She has worked on several large multimedia projects, including foreign language projects, and has worked closely with faculty and her CITL colleagues in developing online courses for two schools at IUB. She has a B.S. Microbiology, M.S. Applied Health Science (Safety Management) and is working on her Ph.D. in Human Performance.

As the Campus Writing Program Director for CITL, John Paul helps instructors design, assess, and grade writing assignments. He has taught as a faculty member at Ohio Northern University and as an Associate Instructor at IU. John Paul’s research and teaching interests include writing pedagogy, the visual arts, and disability studies. He has a Ph.D. in English from IU and an M.A. in English from Georgetown University.

Susan investigates new technologies and helps faculty and departments develop online and blended courses. Her interests include media design, how to teach and assess metacognitive skills, how to create engaging online and classroom learning environments, and how the tools we use shape the way we think, learn, and communicate. Susan received a Ph.D. in Instructional Systems Technology from IU in 1992.

Katie’s work focuses on the professional development of graduate student instructors, teaching in the sciences, and issues related to large class instruction. Before coming to IU, she taught a large freshman biology course and mentored graduate student teaching at Boston University. Katie received a BS in Biology from Cornell University and a Ph.D. in Ecology from the University of Georgia.

Lisa’s work focuses on assessment at a variety of levels, including assessing students’ learning, helping faculty evaluate and improve their teaching, and working with programs to conduct curriculum review. She is interested in the challenges of designing courses in alignment with learning goals and the teaching of large courses. Lisa holds a Ph.D. in Psychology from Cornell University, and conducted postdoctoral research in neuroscience at the University of California, Irvine and at UCLA.

Joan’s specialty lies in leading faculty groups to make disciplinary ways of thinking available to students. With David Pace she developed the “Decoding the Disciplines” approach to define crucial bottlenecks to learning, dissect and model expert thinking, and assess student performance. Joan and the History Learning Project (Pace and Professors Arlene Diaz and Leah Shopkow) were awarded the Menges Research Award from the Professional Development Network in Higher Education and the Maryellen Weimer Scholarly Work on Teaching and Learning Award.

George coordinates CITL’s Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Program, where he advises and supports IUB instructors as they conduct classroom research and collect evidence of student learning. He is also co-facilitator of IUB’s Course Development Institute and consults with HPER, SPEA and other schools on instructional and curricular issues. George holds an MFA in photography from Ohio University and a M.Ed. in Instructional Design/Organizational Development from the University of Illinois.

Cordah specializes in direct support of faculty and instructors who are integrating technologies into teaching and learning. She has managed major grant-funded instructional technologies projects and specializes in projects supporting foreign language instruction. In addition, she has experience in copyright and fair use of media for instruction, anti-plagiarism strategies, course design and development, and distance learning.

Kelly consults with faculty on best practices of instructional technologies in various learning environments. Shannon's interests include assessment at all levels, curriculum design, and research methodology in quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods. Prior to coming to IU, she has applied her interests in a STEM learning environment and taught a variety of psychology courses to both undergraduate and graduate students in face-to-face, hybrid, and online formats. Shannon earned a BS in psychology from Ball State University, as well as a MA in experimental psychology and a Ph.D. in curriculum & instruction with a focus in higher education from Indiana State University.

Michael directs CITL’s Service-Learning Program. In this role, he assists faculty in developing pedagogically sound and community responsive service-learning classes, as well as provides ongoing pedagogical support for faculty currently teaching service-learning courses. Prior to joining IU, Michael directed an innovative youth leadership program in Kinshasa, Congo. Michael has a BA in conflict management and an MA in sustainable tourism from IU.

Jo Ann leads a staff of 50 tutors at Writing Tutorial Services (WTS), where she is responsible for the hiring, training, and supervision of WTS tutors. She also consults with faculty interested in using writing to enhance their students’ learning. Before coming to IUB, Jo Ann served nearly twenty years as a consultant and writing center director at University of Missouri, Columbia.

Anita Shields has been site manager at Writing Tutorial Services for over thirteen years, where she oversees daily operations of a major writing center; before that she worked for IU’s English department.

Sharon Smith is Office Services Assistant for CITL, coordinating daily operations and communications for our large staff. She holds an Associate’s Degree in Continuing Studies from Indiana University.
