Course Development Institute

2022 Course Development Institute(s)

The Foundational CDI will take place July 8 - August 5, 2022. We will be utilizing a hybrid format with a combination of synchronous and asynchronous activities held both virtually and on the Bloomington campus starting July 8, 2022. The five required synchronous sessions will be held from 10am-12pm on Fridays (July 8, 15, 22, 29 and August 5) and will last 2 hours. The first session (July 8) will be devoted to introductions of participants and the CDI overall.

Those who enroll will be asked to choose one course in any modality to develop or revise. By way of highly interactive processes and activities, Institute facilitators guide participants through the beginning phases of developing a new course or transforming an existing course. Participants receive invaluable feedback from colleagues from other departments and disciplines on the work they do during the Institute.

In addition to the main sessions, we will hold 30 minute office hours virtually on Wednesdays (July 13, 20, 27, and August 3). Participants are encouraged (but not required) to attend these sessions if they have questions about the week’s content or assignment. We will schedule one office hour session on Wednesday mornings and another in the afternoons. Participants may attend either session.

By the end of the Institute, participants can expect to have determined learning outcomes for their students, outlined a major final assignment (or exam), and aligned assignments to help students meet the specified learning outcomes. Additionally, participants will have opportunities to implement best practices for creating learning environments and communicating the course to students. All participants will leave with the foundations of their course syllabus in place.

We estimate that the total time required to fully participate in the Foundational CDI will be between 5 to 7 hours per week.

Fill out and submit an application by May 31, 2022 to be considered. Applicants will be notified of their status on June 3, 2022. Questions about the Institute may be sent to the facilitators,  Shannon Sipes or Jennifer Turrentine.
