Scholarly Teaching Week
Held annually during the week of fall break, Scholarly Teaching Week provides a variety of opportunities for the IUB instructional community to engage in discussions and programming around evidence-based teaching. The week culminates in the Celebration of Teaching; a one-day mini conference showcasing scholarly teaching by full time IUB instructional faculty. The goals of Scholarly Teaching week are to:
- Foster community among teaching focused faculty members,
- Showcase evidence-based teaching on campus,
- Raise awareness of evidence-based strategies & SoTL literature,
- Inspire participants to try something new in their own courses.
Introduction to the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning (SoTL) Faculty Learning Community (FLC)
For many faculty members, the classroom can be a source of interesting questions about students’ learning. For example: What is the impact of a specific active learning technique on my students’ understanding of course material? How do my students prepare for exams and how does that correlate with their performance? Does my students’ prior coursework or academic background correlate with their performance in my class? In seeking answers to these kinds of questions, faculty can use the research methods of their own discipline to examine their teaching and their students’ learning. This is the premise underlying the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL), a program that helps faculty members take a scholarly approach to their teaching and share the results of their inquiry with their colleagues. In this FLC, participants will learn about SoTL by developing a proposal for their own SoTL project.
This FLC is offered biannually and runs the full academic year. Please see the CITL Faculty Learning Communities webpage for more information on our current offerings.
SoTL Writing Institute
In this extended SoTL Writing Institute, participants will undertake drafting their first SoTL manuscript in a faculty cohort co-lead by CITL SoTL and writing experts. Spanning the entire summer, we will work both synchronously and asynchronously to examine SoTL as a genre, writing for interdisciplinary audiences, and publishing avenues for SoTL. (With the exception of the first and last meeting, all synchronous meetings will be held via Zoom.) Participants should enter the institute with a clear project or topic to write about and can expect to end the summer with an article-length draft manuscript ready to submit for publication.
