The Center for Innovative Teaching and Learning conducts workshops, mid-semester student evaluations of teaching, classroom observations, and private consultations for graduate students about teaching. We help instructors at all levels with instructional theory, practice, and technology in the following areas:
- course planning and design
- course management and activities
- combining community engagement with course-based learning through the Service-Learning Program
- assignment design and grading strategies, and norming sessions for course graders facilitated by the Campus Writing Program
- test and quiz design
- course assessment and evaluation
- documenting teaching through a teaching portfolio
- incorporation of current learning technologies
The Associate Instructor Workshop on Campus Climate, sponsored by the Office of the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education and facilitated by staff from the Center for Innovative Teaching and Learning, occurs during fall orientation and is required of all new graduate instructors at IU Bloomington. This event offers techniques for effectively teaching to undergraduate students with diverse backgrounds and learning styles.

Pedagogy courses are offered in twenty–eight schools and departments around campus to develop graduate students’ disciplinary teaching skills. CITL assists faculty in designing these courses and maintains a listing of courses, faculty contacts, and associated syllabi. The CITL has also compiled various resources that will assist in the design of a pedagogy course, including recommended readings, activities and assignments, and learning objectives.
CITL consultants will also upon invitation lead in-class workshops and presentations for graduate pedagogy courses. These workshops are discipline-specific, and can approach any of the teaching topics listed above. Typically, these sessions are designed in consultation with the pedagogy faculty member and built into the course syllabus.

These learning communities engage interdisciplinary groups of advanced graduate students in evidence-based and reflective teaching practice. Framed around the interdisciplinary model of IU’s Collegium on Inquiry in Action funded by the Teagle Foundation and the subsequent Paths to the Professoriate Graduate Student Learning Community, graduate student participants, with the support of selected faculty mentors and consultants, discuss selections of advanced literature about learning and pedagogy; identify a learning challenge in their course; develop and implement an innovative approach to address this challenge; assess student success using quantitative and qualitative measures; and communicate professionally about their teaching. Graduate student participants benefit from the community of inquiry and the support and encouragement of like-minded colleagues and faculty mentors. They see an evolution in their teaching techniques and a greater attentiveness to scholarly teaching. See also, information regarding our current graduate student learning communities.
Mid-career graduate student instructors at IUB productively reflect on their current teaching experiences and put those reflections into practice through experiences such as advanced pedagogy courses and learning communities. Read More

The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning program at IUB offers a number of seminars throughout the year reporting on research on teaching and learning on the IU campus.
The Preparing Future Faculty conference is a one–day, on–campus conference for graduate students which offers advice from faculty on developing the teaching and research record, understanding differences in academic environments, and preparing for the academic job market. Sponsored by the Graduate School, the Departments of Biology, Communication and Culture, History, and Sociology, as well as the School of Journalism, this on-campus conference for graduate students convenes at the Indiana Memorial Union in early spring.

Graduate Teaching Apprenticeship Program
The Graduate Teaching Apprenticeship Program (GTAP) provides career development and serves as a compliment to departmental resources, as participants will create multiple products needed for the academic job market.
Through the Future Faculty Teaching Fellowships (FFTF), advanced IU Bloomington doctoral students and advanced MFA students in Fine Arts experience faculty life at non–residential Indiana University campuses or possibly independent colleges in Indiana. FFT Fellows are mentored by a faculty member at the host institution as they teach two courses per semester for one or two semesters and participate in faculty orientation, faculty meetings, and other service activities.
Lieber Associate Instructor Awards, initiated in 1961, have been presented each year to outstanding teachers among the university’s graduate students who combine their programs of advanced study with instructional employment in their schools and departments.
