Inclusive Group Work
Diversity refers to differences: differences of perspective that could stem from cultural affiliation, nationality, ethnic identity, racial identity, gender, sexual orientation, socioeconomic class, spirituality, age, and/or disability. Diversity is created by a collection of perspectives, including those assumed to be the norm, neutral, or non-controversial. A person does not have to identify as a minority or as in some way exceptional in order to be diverse.
One challenge for instructors is to help students recognize how their own cultural orientation shapes their perspectives and affinities. Inclusive teaching and learning practices recognize that diverse perspectives influence the way students engage with the subject matter of the course and help students build on these perspectives to develop skills in the field.
This page summarizes cultural, teaching and learning resources on campus that support inclusive educational practices.
Looking at differences in cultural practices can be a useful way to begin conversations about diversity. A number of cultural centers on campus can be used to enhance an instructor’s curriculum and classroom techniques. Cultural centers might sponsor programs an instructor could send students to, provide opportunities for field trips, or teach a workshop on a number of different topics. They may also provide advocacy services for students who need them. Some of the major cultural centers at Indiana University include:

The following offices provide a broad range of services to support inclusive teaching and learning at IU.
Office of Student Ethics. The Code of Student Rights, Responsibilities, and Conduct sets out the standards to which all students at IU are held accountable. The Procedures for Bloomington Campus govern the administration of the Campus Judicial System at IU Bloomington.

Office of the Vice President for Diversity, Equity, and Multicultural Affairs. The mission of the Office of the Vice President for Diversity, Equity, and Multicultural Affairs (DEMA) is to be an effective advocate for students, faculty, and staff of color and a provider of programs and services that promote diversity, equity, and excellence at Indiana University. DEMA works to incorporate principles of equality and diversity into the curriculum and provide a culturally affirming environment through work with student organizations and cultural centers.
Office of Affirmative Action. This office actively works to: eliminate inequality and discrimination; foster a climate of tolerance and inclusiveness; promote opportunities for full participation in university life; and create a comfortable, respectful, and professional environment, based on understanding and trust.
Center for Innovative Teaching and Learning (CITL). The Center for Innovative Teaching and Learning provides leadership and expertise that support efforts to innovate in the curricula, to implement effective pedagogies in and beyond the classroom, and to enhance student learning and engagement.
CITL provides a wide variety of services to support teaching and learning at IU Bloomington:
- Individual consultations and workshops about all aspects of teaching
- Departmental support for curricular development and assessment
- Faculty learning communities to promote collegial explorations of teaching
- Support for scholarly approaches to teaching and learning
- Programs to promote and share instructional innovations
- Support for student learning through service-learning opportunities and writing tutorial services
CITL is a partnership of the Office of the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education and University Information Technology Services.
Bloomington Evaluative Services & Testing (BEST). BEST helps IU faculty, students, and administrators with assessment, evaluation, and testing through consultation, WWW-based tools, and other services. BEST maintains the Online Course Questionnaire (OCQ) and provides machine-based scoring of tests, surveys and other evaluation instruments
Classroom Technology Services. Classroom Technology Services provides assistance with video equipment, TVs, VCRs, DVD players, CD players, computer equipment and data projectors, overhead projectors, and other technology-related materials.
School of Education Instructional Consulting Resources. This page developed by the School of Education's Instructional Consulting office provides information about how to tailor teaching strategies to address issues of diversity including: gender, race, ethnicity, international students, age, religious and political beliefs, regionalism, physical and medical needs, and learning disabilities. It also provides links to a number of online resources about diversity and teaching.
Academic Support Centers. The Academic Support Centers offer free tutoring, advising and walk-in academic help in a variety of disciplines. Locations in Briscoe, Teter and Forest Residence Halls are open for late-night help Sunday through Thursday.
Counseling & Psychological Services (CAPS). Student service available through the IU Student Health Center. The site includes a useful resource for instructors entitled, Dealing with Distressed Students.
Disability Services for Students. This office provides information, services and referrals for veterans and for students with visual, hearing, physical, and learning disabilities.
Hoosier Help Online (H20). A one-stop website for student-oriented services, organizations and questions to help undergraduates (and everyone else) in “getting started, getting involved, getting support, and getting around."
Student Academic Center. The Center provides a comprehensive program of general learning support services which includes courses for credit, individualized academic assessment and assistance, peer tutoring, supplemental instruction, workshops, and outreach.
Office of Student Life and Learning. The Office of Student Life and Learning provides information, including a searchable directory, about active student organizations at IU. Depending on the organization, instructors may be able to arrange field trips or class presentations or direct students with special interests towards these organizations.
Writing Tutorial Services. WTS provides individual tutoring to students working on writing projects for any of their courses. WTS offers free help to writers in any phase of the writing process, from brainstorming to outlining, revising to polishing the final draft.
Veterans Support Services. Veterans Support Services assists students who are veterans, service members, or children or spouses of disabled veterans with any university issues or concerns related to their military service, including receiving education benefits, inability to attend orientation due to military orders, deployment during a semester, and delays in VA benefit payment and resulting financial hardship.
