G203 Student Information

The Benjamin Banneker Community Center (part of the City of Bloomington Parks and Recreation) offers a wide variety of recreational activities for children and families. Service-learners for G203 participate in Banneker at the 'View, a structured after school program for students K-6th grade at Fairview Elementary.

Getting started

In-person orientation, by availability. Free mandatory background check through Bloomington Parks and Recreation background check system. There will be 4 orientation sessions held at the Banneker Community Center. The dates are January 20th, January 26th, January 27th, and January 30th from 5-6pm. Students are only required to attend one session and can choose whichever works best with their schedules.

Service description

Commitment/Expectations: 2 shifts each week from 3:45-4:45pm (must choose same 2 days each week for entire semester)

Service-learners act as tutors and aides during after school programming for students K-6th grade at Fairview Elementary. Each service-learner will be paired with a Fairview Elementary student as their tutoring buddy and must choose the same 2 days (MW or TuTh) each week for the entire semester.

The Boys and Girls Clubs are after an afterschool program. Our mission is to empower all youth, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as caring, productive, responsible citizens. We strive to provide an afterschool experience that enriches the lives of our Club members through the presence of trusting adults and engaging programming. Our members range from ages 5-18; service learners may work in one of the following programs: Healthy Lifestyles, Academic Success (STEM), Good Character & Leadership, and Arts programming. Service Learners with transportation are needed for the Ellettsville Club.

Service description

Throughout their the time in the Club, service learners will be asked to do the following:

  • Encourage members to be CPRRS (Caring, Productive, Responsible, Respectful and Safe) through verbal encouragement and positive reinforcement
  • Engage with members, creating a foundation of trust between member and service learner
  • Use trauma-informed care to gently redirect members and keep program spaces safe
  • Assist staff members with program materials and assist Club members throughout the program
  • Model respectful behavior, monitor behaviors, and mentor members
  • Assist in activities with Club members

The service learner may earn the opportunity to lead different parts of the program, including ice-breakers and community builders, and can provide feedback to program staff in regards to programmatic material.

Service description

Shifts are 2 hours per week, scheduled to your availability within the hours of 3:00-6:30 Monday through Friday. Tutoring is scheduled in 45 minute sessions, with 30 minutes of planning and prep time included in each shift. All materials are provided.

Service description

Service-learners will be giving general classroom support monitoring and assisting students completing classwork, or redirecting their attention to help them participate in a whole class activity. Potentially leading 1 on 1 and small group stations.

Fairview Elementary is able to house all service-learners during its operating hours of Monday-Friday from 9:15am - 4:00pm.

Harmony School is an independent, 5013C nonprofit organization that provides pre-K through 12 education. It is a nontraditional school, located close to the IU campus, with a mission to prepare young people to live in and contribute to a heterogeneous democratic country. Harmony School highly prefers vaccinated students as service-learners.

Service description

Those interested in working with children ages 3-5 in the ECP (Early Childhood Program), the elementary school and grades 5/6 will offer in class assistance to the teachers and students of Harmony. It should be of note that there will be a limited number of students who can help in grades 1/2 this spring semester, we have a student teacher!

The ECP can accommodate SLers 8AM-5PM. THe elementary school can accomodate SLers 9AM-3PM. The opportunities to assist in the schools after school program will also be available. This program runs from the time of 3PM-5:30PM.

Head Start (HS) is a family centered child development program whose mission is to promote school readiness by enhancing the social and cognitive development of children through the provision of educational, health, nutritional, social and other services to enrolled children and families. Children participate in a variety of educational activities that reflect best practices in early education. We strive to create a learning environment that will develop cognitive, social, emotional, and physical skills.

SCCAP Head Start has been in existence since 1965 and provides service to over 200 children ages three to five in various locations and classrooms across the county.

Service description

Service-learners will support the classroom teacher by assisting children as they move through their daily routines. Service-learners will also engage with children to help ensure smooth and positive transitions between routines. Their role includes providing general classroom support, monitoring and assisting students with classwork, and redirecting attention as needed to encourage participation in whole-class activities.

Pathways is a nonprofit organization that seeks to eliminate generational poverty for the clients we serve. Pathways is able to do this through the two branches of our organization: Compass Childcare and the Family Resource Center. In Compass Childcare, we offer high quality, licensed care and an accredited curriculum for children that has a sliding fee scale for our clients. Service-learners can be a special interest group leader, teacher aid, one-on-one companion, or storyteller.

Required to attend an hour orientation as well as complete two online training paths through I-LEAD (Access Indiana) before they are able to serve in Compass. Required orientation at one of the following times:

Service description

Service Learners act as a classroom helper, assisting students and teachers through their various activities during the day. This often means acting as a friend, storyteller, teacher, or supervisor to the kids.

Templeton Elementary School is located in South Bloomington whose focus is to educate students into becoming well-rounded individuals. Service-learners will be monitoring elementary-aged students during lunch and recess times which involved building relationships, mentoring the students, and abiding by all safety and behavioral expectations that Templeton holds.

Getting started

Mandatory background check. Orientation either in person or zoom will be determined based on service learner and ACE availability.

Service description

Service-learners can either provide classroom support one on one or in small student groups in either reading, math, and/or behavior redirection or they may provide behavioral and social support during lunch/recess times. Service learners should be able to come in twice a week (M/W or T/TH) for one hour instead of once for 2 hours.

Service-learners will provide assistance on the museum floor, helping visitors feel comfortable and encouraging them to explore the hands-on exhibits and experiences.
