Discussion boards become our default setting for gathering student's thoughts in an online environment. But are we integrating the work students share in their posts into the course as it unfolds? Online discussion offers a means to build a sense of connection not just to the student and course content, but among your students, as well. Drawing on Boettcher & Conrad's (2016) Online Teaching Survival Guide, this webinar will share tips for building a sustainable and rich online discussion practice.

Join the CITL and IUB instructors for an informal conversation about designing effective assessments in large classes. Designing assessments in large classes can be challenging. As an instructor, how can I design effective assessments that don't require excessive time to grade? How can I assess students' ability to move beyond memorization to higher-level thinking? These coffee hour events will be a relaxed space for instructors to share their experiences on this topic.

Contract Grading: A Better Way to Grade Whether F2F or Online

Friday, June 5, 2020 1 p.m. - 2 p.m., Online

With elements of labor-based, competency-based, and Specifications Grading (or Specs Grading) contract grading provides students with choice and control that boosts their motivation and sense of fairness. Contract grading makes grading easier for teachers whether in f2f or online classes. In this webinar we will create our own assessment bundles, design one dimension-based rubric, and get feedback on them. By the end of the session, we will be well on our way to a new, better grading scheme for a course we teach.
