For Graduate Students: Inclusive Teaching Strategies

Wednesday, March 7, 1:00 PM - 2:30 PM, CITL Workshop Room (Wells Library E243)

Are you interested in learning strategies for teaching with diversity? Do you identify as a member of a marginalized group? By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to identify which types of tools exist for teaching diverse topics. Participants will also discuss concepts such as the “Banking Concept of Teaching” and “Integrity in Teaching”.

Service-Learning Coffee Hour: “But It’s Ungradable!”: Using Reflective Writing for Learning and Assessment in Service Experiences

Friday, March 9, 9:30 AM - 11:00 AM, CITL Workshop Room (Wells Library E243)

Reflective writing is a broad and important tool for helping students make sense of service experiences in service-learning and community engaged classes. Dr. Katie Silvester (English), Dr. Joan Linton (English), and Dr. John Paul Kanwit (Campus Writing Program) will discuss what engaged writing looks like across the curriculum in both domestic and international settings. They will provide strategies for employing reflective writing, including the use of rhetorical frameworks, deep listening practices, and observational writing. Participants will also leave the coffee hour with methods for assessing students on what they have learned through their reflective writings.
