SOTL Event: Stereotype and Prejudice in Academia

Wednesday, September 13, 10:00 AM - 11:30 AM, Frangipani Room (IMU)

Mary Murphy studies the cues that influence under-representation and underperformance of women and of minorities in academia, and the biological and socialization factors that may contribute to these phenomena. These cues make people with stereotyped or stigmatized social identities cognitively and physiologically vigilant, depressing their sense of belonging, and decreasing their desire to continue to participate in the setting. Besides bringing up the particular concerns of underrepresented groups about stereotype threat, she considers possible interventions for classrooms and teaching. Topics for table discussions will include taking stock of stereotype threat in your department or classroom and applying the research on stereotype threat to your own context. Ample time will be provide for an active question and answer session.

It also encourages interaction with the content, helps instructors get to know students' work, and provides multiple opportunities for feedback.
