About CITL

Franklin Hall

The Center for Innovative Teaching and Learning (CITL) provides instructional support for instructors of all levels at IU Bloomington–from individual consultations with teachers to support for high-profile educational initiatives that impact the entire campus.

Formed in the fall of 2010, CITL is a partnership of the Office of the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education and University Information Technology Services. CITL joins together the personnel and programs of these former units to provide a comprehensive approach to instructional support: Campus Instructional Consulting, the Campus Writing Program, the Office of Service-Learning, and the Teaching and Learning Technologies Center. The Center for Innovative Teaching and Learning is located in Franklin Hall 004 and 008.

By combining these programs, we seek to offer a comprehensive approach to supporting teaching at IUB–providing both “one stop shopping” and a more collaborative and dynamic way of addressing complex teaching issues.

Our Mission and Vision

The Center for Innovative Teaching and Learning provides leadership and expertise that support efforts to innovate in the curricula, to implement powerful pedagogies in and beyond the classroom, and to enhance student learning and engagement.

CITL supports student learning by promoting excellent teaching and the ongoing development of innovative instructional approaches at IU Bloomington.

CITL provides a supportive environment for instructors of all ranks to explore pioneering approaches in their teaching, in collaboration with instructional consultants, instructional technology consultants, and other specialists from across the university.

CITL promotes scholarly teaching and innovative uses of instructional technologies, facilitates the sharing and dissemination of pedagogical information and expertise, and aligns such efforts with the university’s goals and initiatives related to teaching and learning.

CITL provides its services in a unified and comprehensive manner, reflecting its status as a collaboration of the Office of the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education and University Information Technology Services.

Guiding Practices

In order to fulfill this mission in our daily work, the staff of CITL will:

  • Provide a comprehensive approach to instructional development that integrates multiple areas of expertise—instructional consulting, service-learning, instructional technologies, and writing;
  • Provide flexible, client-centered support to meet the needs of teachers, schools, and departments, including online, classroom, and in-office services;
  • Encourage instructional innovation at all levels, from individual adoption of new teaching methods to the development of cutting-edge instructional approaches that reach beyond individual classrooms;
  • Offer transformational programs that engage teachers in an active and ongoing process of reflective teaching and professional growth;
  • Promote the incorporation of learning outcomes and assessment techniques into all teaching situations;
  • Engage in strategic and faculty-centered decision-making that puts teacher needs and institutional goals at the heart of our programs and services;
  • Incorporate assessment of our own programs and services to ensure value to IUB teachers and to allow for continuous improvement of CITL;
  • Hold ourselves to the highest professional standards, including respect for the confidentiality of our clients and adherence to the Ethical Guidelines for Educational Developers established by the Professional and Organizational Development Network.

A tremendous opportunity to work with and for students and faculty across the campus in order to shape and deliver a 21st-century undergraduate education...
